Plotsummary
BorninasmalltowninthecountrysidesurroundingPistoia,AdrianaisanattractiveyounggirlwhocountsonusingherlookstogoplacesintheentertainmentbusinessinRome.Movingtothecapital,sheworksfirstofallinahairdressingsalon,theninasmallcinemawhereshemanagestogetajobworkinginfancydress.Meantime,shesocializeswithyoungmenoftheuppermiddleclasses,whotakehertopartiesandoutonthetownwiththesoleaimoftakingadvantageofher.Adrianaknowstheirgame,butplaysalong.Inthemeantime,shemeetsanagentcalledCianfanna,amodestmoney-grubberwhointroduceshertoajournalistfriendofhissohecanwriteanarticleonher.Havingthuslaunchedhercareerinadvertising,Adrianadecidestogohometovisitherparents.Oncehome,however,sheisdistraughttolearnofthedeathofhersister.ReturningtoRome,shetakesactinglessons,butduringonelessonshesuddenlyfaints:sheispregnant,withnoideaofwhothefatherofherchildis.ThedaysgobyandAdrianatriestoforgetaboutherpregnancy,whilesleepingwithanincreasinglylonglistoflovers.Andyet,despitethefacttheseencountersareoftenlessthanenjoyable,atonepointsheactuallyfallsinlove:hisnameisAntonioandhe'sadecentyoungmanfromarespectablefamily,butstillinlovewithaformergirlfriendheisunabletoforget…
